Livingston Gearhart Collection of Photographs, 1896-1949

About the Collection

The collection contains 192 photographs from the personal collection of composer, arranger, and pianist, Livingston Gearhart. They include photographs of Gearhart as a young man in Buffalo, New York and East Orange, New Jersey, photographs taken while Gearhart was in Europe 1937-1939, and photographs from the 1940s. Other people included in the images include Nadia Boulanger and her summer class at the American Conservatory at Fontainebleau in 1937-1938, conductor Walter Damrosch, composer Darius Milhaud and his family, conductor Fred Waring, Gearhart’s sister Martha and mother Lillian, members of the Budapest String Quartet, and four photographs of composer Johannes Brahms taken in 1896.
