On December 8th, the Buffalo basketball team, in a tremendous display of team work, pulled off the major upset of the young basketball season by beating a nationally ranked Villanova team at the Palestra in Philadelphia, PA. The final score was Buffalo 63, Villanova 62.
According to Coach Serfustini, “We didn’t make any mistakes, waited for good shots and kept hounding Villanova on defense until they tired. When they did, we took control of the game.”
Special credit should be given to Ken Parr, our 6-2 center, who out-rebounded the 6-9 Villanova middleman, 15 rebounds to 4 in the second half.
That was the big sports news of the day in The Spectrum, the University at Buffalo’s Student Newspaper on Friday, December 9, 1960. The 1960-61 Buffalo Bulls varsity basketball team would also knock-off Syracuse University (77-62) on their way to a very successful 18-5 season. The team was lead by 5-10 senior guard Bob Myszewski. Myszewski was voted the Most Valuable Player for the second consecutive year. He was also picked on the All-Western New York second team.
