Love Canal 35th Anniversary

Posted on: | by Scott Hollander |

Lois Gibbs returned to Love Canal in Niagara Falls, NY on the 35th anniversary of the first neighborhood evacuation. See the Buffalo News and the Niagara Gazette for two interesting reports on her visit.

Love Canal is probably the country’s most notorious and infamous hazardous waste site. It wasn’t the first. It wasn’t the worst. But it did grab headlines, draw attention, and stimulate scientists, industrial leaders, politicians, government officials, and grassroots activists.

Visit the University Archives Love Canal Collections website for an introduction to the history and background of the events that occurred at Love Canal. Includes two chronologies of events, scanned documents of the Ecumenical Task Force, database of Love Canal articles, and a glossary of definitions for individuals, organizations, businesses, government agencies, chemical waste dump sites, and major issues relating to the Love Canal and other local environmental disaster areas.

The Love Canal Images digital collection consists of photographs, maps, and posters related to the Love Canal environmental disaster.
