First made in the Middle Ages, they are easily fashioned from poplar or willow wood, and can be tailored to the individual foot. They are safe, durable, and especially good for keeping feet dry in the often soggy Dutch polder landscape.     <dcterms:description><![CDATA[This view of the central &quot;Adoration of the Mystic Lamb&quot; panel shows the frame&#039;s nod to its makers: Hubert and Jan Van Eyck. Art historians believe that Hubert constructed and outlined the frame, but that Jan did most of the painting. The altarpiece was stolen from St. Bavo&#039;s Cathedral by Germans during World War I and again in World War II. After World War II, the altarpiece was returned in pieces over the course of the 20th century. It spent some of its time hidden in a salt mine and, consequently, has required much restoration.
