Title
The Small Cowper Madonna
Subject
Mary, Blessed Virgin, Saint
Jesus Christ
Description
Widener Collection (1942.9.57).In the distance on a hilltop, Raphael has painted a scene he knew well from his childhood, the domed church of San Bernardino, two miles outside Urbino. The church contains the tombs of dukes of Urbino, Federico and Guidobaldo da Montefeltro, and their wives. Donato Bramante, whose architecture was key in establishing the High Renaissance style, may have designed the church.
