Among the subjects Duncan discussed during the nineteenth and twentieth sessions were Joyce, Studs Lonigan (Farrell), Dante Gabriel Rossetti, Blake, Berkeley, Aristotle, Susanne Langer, Muslim art, Milton, Dante, Bunyan, Levertov, Whitman, Pound's Culture (1938), Sappho, Hesiod, Homer, the Greek dramatists, Hugo, Val??ry, Marianne Moore, Olson, Dante, Cocteau, Freud, Heraclitus, Freud's Civilization and its discontents, McClure, McLuhan, Ovid, Abraham, the Zohar, David, Spicer, Helen Adam, Ben Jonson, Marvell, Shakespeare, Pound, George Wallace, Barry Goldwater, Lyndon B. Johnson, Robert F. Kennedy, Eugene McCarthy, Darwin, the 1965 Berkeley Poetry Conference, John F. Kennedy, Oedipus, Ives, Webern, the Old Testament, Nerval, Pound's The Pisan Cantos, Whitman, Washington, Adams, Jefferson, the New Testament, Dante's La vita nuova, Charlemagne, Beckett, Dahlberg, Marquis de Sade, Vietnam, the French Revolution, and Hitler. During the nineteenth and twentieth sessions, the books Duncan added to the reading list were A portrait of the artist as a young man, Chamber music, Exiles, Ulysses, and Finnegans wake by Joyce, Art as experience by John Dewey, Thomas Carlyle's "The hero as poet" from Heroes and Hero-Worship, Emerson's essay "The poet," the 1855 preface to Leaves of grass by Whitman again, and Lilith and the rest of the pastoral novels of George MacDonald.
