[Reading at the Creative Arts Festival, Kent State University, April 19, 1973] / Robert Creeley, Fielding Dawson.
Description
Recorded at the Creative Arts Festival at Kent State University in Kent, Ohio on April 19, 1973 on a 7 inch Scotch reel-to-reel tape. Recorded by Robert J. Bertholf, while serving as Professor of English and organizer of the Creative Arts Festival at Kent State University. Recording was donated to the Poetry Collection at the University at Buffalo, where Bertholf subsequently served as Curator.
Reading by Robert Creeley and Fielding Dawson held at the Creative Arts Festival at Kent State University on April 19, 1973. Creeley read passages from the third section of Mabel: a story (1976), and Dawson read two short stories, "The accident" and "The singing man," which were both published in The man who changed vvernight (1976). "Fielding is without question the greatest prose writer of my time," Creeley said. Before reading the passage of Mabel that begins "Voices fading fast." Creeley said "This should be dedicated to Sam Abrams, who wrote a great book called Barbara, which is the multiple situation of physical event." "For my part of this reading," Dawson said, "I would like to dedicate the following two stories, short pieces that I've written that do go along with the stories that I read on Tuesday night, that they're part of a larger future collection, will be under the title Mary Lou, and these two stories will to me represent the end of this arts festival which for me has been an incredible experience, and I know George Kimball and Bob Creeley and Stan Brakhage, and Stan spoke to me personally how deeply moved he was by the whole thing and Harvey Bialy, we have all felt this way. And Will Petersen and Michael McClure and Arthur Okamura. This has been a unique experience for us, being here, each of us. I haven't seen Ed Dorn in ten years, and only then it was under the most chance kind of meeting, and I've met several of these people who have been here, and what I'm trying to say is that those of us who have been invited to be here have really enjoyed it and it's been very rewarding and we think that the students here have been absolutely fantastic, and this has been an original dialogue between those of us who have been invited here to lecture and to read and to give you our work."
