Title
Shakespeare First Folio Mr. VVilliam Shakespeares comedies, histories, & tragedies : published according to the true originall copies.
Description
The First Folio of William Shakespeare (1563-1616) was published in 1623, seven years after Shakespeare’s death, and brought together 36 of his plays, including 18 that had not previously appeared in print. Printed in London by Isaac and William Jaggard and Edward Blount, the First Folio contains a portrait of Shakespeare by Martin Droeshout, dedications by the editors John Heminges and Henry Condell, and verse epigraphs by Ben Jonson. Lockwood’s copy, one of the 234 known to exist as of April 2016, bears his bookplate and was bound by Riviere & Son in deep red crushed morocco. It features giltstamping on the front and rear covers, cover edges, and spine; gilt edges; and marbled endpapers. The title page featuring Shakespeare’s portrait is a facsimile, and although genuine the page with Jonson’s “To the Reader” has been inlaid. There are also numerous pagination errors. Records indicate that Lockwood purchased his copy of the First Folio from The Brick Row Book Shop, and that it had previously belonged to W. H. Woodward and Francis Edwards.
