My Dear Friend:-
After your great kindness to me during my Ex’s
I certainly should have an-
- wered before- and in fact
had, one nearly finished
when I left Buffalo. but was
waiting to add more- so you
did not hear at all-. I wonder
if my life will always be
made up of failures.
Well my dear do not think
for a minute that I have
forgotten you even tho I
have made other acquain
-tances.
The Ex’s were unusually
severe they all said. I [?]
of course.
Dr Stoddard had his Ex.
where he finished his lectures
in the middle of the term
We were glad as Dr. [Pi?kin]
prepared us- night + day be
fore- well- the eventful eve
came- I went to the college at
half after six. at seven Dr. S-
was to be there. We waited
until 9. then a committee. telo-
phoned to Dr. Carey. He
answered that he was probably
at Dr. [???tha??s] as he had been
invited there to dine. Well
Mr Steele and Palmer - went
there. + to their surprise
saw. Dr. Stoddard. in a
drunken condition. Well
he soon came to College
after 9. remember- + we
were all tired out. He could
not walk straight- so sat down
and managed to tell us about
what he wanted. Of course
there was lots of cribbing +
they even went down and
asked him questions + he
would tell them.
Well- I finished my paper
at 1/2 after 12. arriving home
at ten minutes to one. We all
kept quiet about his being
intoxicated. so the fresh do
not know it now. I dont think
the next day he (Dr. S-) had
to give his last lecture +
the boy thought first they
would receive him in per
-fect silence + then thinking
that he probably felt
sorry they applauded him
until the tears came
into his eyes. Then of course I
felt like hugging him. woman
fashion. Well he thanked them
for the favor shown him [?]
+ I suppose- he is wandering
among the catacombs. as
he crossed the ocean-
The rest of the Ex’s were
about as usual. Dr. Price
held a written Ex. for Dr.
Rochester. Dr. Price had on a
full dress suit at the Ex.
looked quite [s????tish].
Dr. Milhaus Ex. was very
hard- He was also hald
seas over- but Dr. Vanden
burg was there. + prevented
cheating.
I worked so hard I boarded
No. 2
the first part of the term. +
there I rented rooms and
mother came + kept house
for me. I wish you + I had
the same room- The
people were so friendly. never
asked “Vat you doin.” I dont be
lieve had I looked the city
over I could have found
better people. My brother came
the before Commencement
I attended Com. with Dr. Man
-chester (a graduate). He came
for em with a carriage + took
me to the banquet in one too.
When I went on the platform
in the last ten. the audience
applauded. so long + loud
that the tears came in my
eyes- The graduates all
joined too. wasn’t it good
of them? My dear boys.
I miss them very much.
I had a lovely basket of
flowers and a large bou
quet. but Dr. Packwood gave
me neither or none-
Wasn’t he real mean. when
he could amply afford. Well
[m?] conscience is clear certainly
I have always treated him
kindly. He was jealous to think
I got thru. I suppose.
I received the unanimous
vote. of the faculty. The boys
waited at the College for
the announcements with
old drums tin horns
+ the like.
3 were plucked. and they
would not let them go
before the curators.
I did dread the curators
Ex. but for thru nicely.
Dr. Carey asked me about
20 questions I guess
I was the only lady at the ban
quet. Did I have pluck Sister-
There was nothing objectionable
only at the table opposite me.
there sat the Dr. that was in
your class I believe. with
Ptosis. (dead drunk). So he
did not eat anything. Every
one else looked bright +
happy- + the toasts were
applauded. My Preceptor could
not be present. on account
of the illness of his little
daughter. I was so sorry.
Mip Dickinson a new student
+ one you would love
has a position at Dr. RV.
Pierces. + receives 60 dollars
a month.
Mip Knapp is at [D????]
Company.
She tried to go up on
three branches. did well on
Physiology - but failed on
anatomy. so did not try chem.
Dr. Pohlman is splendid. if
he was only a christian. but
he doesn’t believe in anything.
I heard from Miss Dickinson this bit
of nonsense - A doctor died at East
Avon - one day + the next Dr. Jones
one of my class went to look the
ground over - when lo- + behold there
was the sign of Dr. Strasenburg. another
of my class as you prob. remember.
It is needless to say. Dr. Jones
withdrew.
My letter was interrupted here
by caller. to resume. write
me all about yourself. Is
Dr. Goldberg in Olean?
I will certainly be more
prompt now. Do you hear
anything from Mrs Burchard
I wonder where Miss Carroll
is now. Mrs [S?????] visited
I am as wild as of you
I expect Mr Thompson tomorrow + Dr. Manchester
Saturday. you see
College. late in the term she was dressed poorly
but said she
was doing
well. + had
had 29 later
cases since
the first of
may. Do you
get any
simple
cases of medicine?
i have had
some so
quiet
Yours ever
Louise
