For making the best cough syrup: take one oz. of thorough [?], one oz. of slippery elm; one oz. of stick licorice and one oz. of flaxseed; [?] together in one qt. Of water until the strength is all extracted. Strain carefully, add one pint of best molasses, ½ lb of loaf sugar. [?] these all together and when cold bottle tight. Best medicine ever used. A first dose of one taste often at a time will alleviate the most distressing cough of the lungs. [?]
