Old arched stone bridge, rural Ethiopia

For most of Ethiopia's history, both ruling dynasties and local leaders were protected from invasion by natural barriers, e.g. rivers or mountain ridges. Bridges were relatively rare until the late 20th century. This one, near the falls of the Blue Nile, dates from 1626.
