Menelik II (1844-1913; ruled as Emperor 1889-1913) ushered Ethiopia into the modern age, significantly expanding the Ethiopian empire in the process. He is shown riding a horse, honoring his defeat of Italian invaders in the crucial 1896 Battle of Adwa.
