Most of the seated figures in the front row are identified in handwritten notes beneath the image, including notable literary and cultural figures such as James Joyce, Paul Valéry, Sylvia Beach, Adrienne Monnier, and Léon-Paul Fargue. The inscription at the bottom reads, “Déjeuner ‘Ulysse’ le Jeudi 27 Juin 1929.” The group appears to be commemorating the celebration of James Joyce's Ulysses. Many attendees are dressed in formal or semi-formal attire, and the scene is set indoors near windows with open shutters.
