Title
Presidential palace, New Delhi
Description
This example of overblown Anglo-Indian design comes from Sir Edward Lutjens, who was charged with building a totally new city that would reflect the glory of the British Empire, and particularly of 'the jewel in the crown,' namely India. How paradoxical it is that within a dozen years from the formal inaugural of the new capital, India had changed from part of the Empire to a major independent country on its own.
