Title
Luxurious bathroom, Imperial Hotel
Description
The splendor of this hotel [refurbished in the late 1990s in the imperial grandeur with which it was constructed in the mid-1930s] can be clearly seen in this picture. The contrast with bathroom facilities available to the Indian population as a whole could not be starker. As of 2007, significantly less than half the people had direct access to sanitary facilities, relying instead on dry toilets that were cleaned out by people of the lowest ranks of society, or on simply urinating or defecating outdoors.
