Title
Udaipur, Maharaja's palace facade
Description
India has been marked by significant contrasts in income. Here is an example of the Mughul period, when local princes [Rajas and Maharajas] ruled over their own principalities. Under the British, they maintained a quasi-independence, including the ability to tax. Only after independence were these ~565 such entities incorporated into India.
