Title
Carolingian mosaics, Aachen Cathedral
Description
This masterful mosaic depicts Plato, whose name is spelled out in Greek. Great reverence for his and other classical Greek teaching marked the "Carolingian renaissance," the period at the start of the 9th century, when the Holy Roman Empire had been established and relative peace reigned through much of Western Europe.
