Title
Cheese market, Alkmaar
Description
For 22 Fridays each year, cheese venders in Alkmaar follow time-honored traditions in displaying and selling their products. The flags indicate the international, touristic nature of the cheese market, with more than 100,000 visitors annually. Those working there are organized in four groups ("vemen") of seven men each. They can be distinguished by the colors they wear. The market itself has been active since ~1593.
