Title
The work of the Van Eycks
Description
This view of the central "Adoration of the Mystic Lamb" panel shows the frame's nod to its makers: Hubert and Jan Van Eyck. Art historians believe that Hubert constructed and outlined the frame, but that Jan did most of the painting. The altarpiece was stolen from St. Bavo's Cathedral by Germans during World War I and again in World War II. After World War II, the altarpiece was returned in pieces over the course of the 20th century. It spent some of its time hidden in a salt mine and, consequently, has required much restoration. One panel, the Just Judges, has yet to be returned. A restoration sits in its place below Adam and the Singing Angels.
