Title
By the Gravensteen
Description
The Gravensteen, a castle in Ghent, was commissioned and built by Philip of Alsace in 1180. Like many medieval buildings in Ghent, the Gravensteen has been used for a variety of purposes throughout history. Namely, a princely residence, a court, a prison, and a factory. In the 1800s, it was scheduled to be demolished, but the City of Ghent took up restoration efforts and now profits from tourism.
