Title
Dutch shoemaker, Holland
Subject
Clogs--Netherlands
Description
Known as klompen in Dutch, these traditional wooden shoes or clogs enjoy a long history as the preferred work shoes for farmers and gardeners. First made in the Middle Ages, they are easily fashioned from poplar or willow wood, and can be tailored to the individual foot. They are safe, durable, and especially good for keeping feet dry in the often soggy Dutch polder landscape. Painted clogs were usually worn as "Sunday best" and remain a favorite tourist souvenir.
