Located in the busy Place el-hedim at the heart of the city (the medina), the covered market offers mouth-watering candy and other sweets beautifully arrayed in precise towers. In much of the world, small shops that specialize in specific products cluster in the same part of the market. In other corners of the souk fresh produce and meat, as well as spices and dairy, are sold year-round. The markets are especially busy during the month of Ramadan when families break their daily fast in the evening with a specially cooked feast.
