Title
Orthodox Syrian Church leader
Description
The Reverend Makarios headed this church in the early 21st century. The Orthodox Syrian Church traces its roots to the first century of the Common Era, when St. Thomas is said to have visited southwest India and converted high-caste Hindus to Christianity. To this day, 'Mar Thoma' priests (as they are called) remain celibate, drawn from the top ranks of society.
