Title
Burial place for one of France's greatest kings and his wife
Description
The crypt of the St. Denis cathedral houses the tombs of almost all French monarchs and many of their spouses. The tomb shown here is noteworthy artistically and historically. Both King Francois 1er and Queen Claude are shown nude, with signs of incipient decay - a reminder of mortality. Yet note the sumptuous tomb itself, for Francois introduced the Renaissance to France (see other pictures in this collection, especially of Chambord)
