The dukes of Burgundywhose territory included much of present-day Belgium and Luxembourg, the Netherlands, and eastern Francebecame the cultural and political leaders of western Europe. Their major cities of Bruges (Belgium) and Dijon (France) were centers of art and industry as well as politics.
