This ancient gate was sealed off by Sultan Suleiman I in 1541. The sign reads "ET MILITES PLECTENTES CORONAM DE SPINIS IMPOSUERUNT CAPITI EJUS. JOANN XIX 1. ET 2., which translates to "And the soldiers platting a crown of thorns, put it upon his head. John 19:1-2"
