Title
[Poetry reading at the Lockwood Memorial Library, University at Buffalo, April 8, 1960] / May Sarton.
Description
Recorded at the Lockwood Memorial Library at the University at Buffalo on April 8, 1960, 2-3 p.m. on a two 7 inch Proline reel-to-reel.
Poet May Sarton reads her poetry. She is introduced by Oscar A. Silverman. She reads from her books: The land of silence, In time like air, land of fire, The lion and the rose, The leaves of the tree and Cloud, stone, sun, vine. She discusses New Mexico, her emotional response upon receiving a Guggenheim fellowship, and her belief that poetry is a positive act and how important the image is for a poet and her audience. She talks about the difference bewteen her work and that of Allen Ginsberg. She claims that Ginsberg believes that chaos should be in the poem, while she feel that the chaos should be in the process of writing poetry drafts and the end product should be "hacked out of stone."
