Title
[Poetry reading in Bisbee, Arizona, August 25, 1979] / Lawrence Ferlinghetti, Hadley Drummond.
Description
Recorded at the Bisbee Poetry Festival in Bisbee, Arizona on August 25, 1979 by Allen De Loach on 120 minute Memorex sound cassette. The Poetry Collection acquired the recording from De Loach.
This poetry reading by Lawrence Ferlinghetti and Drummond Hadley was held at the Bisbee Poetry Festival in Bisbee, Arizona on August 25, 1979. Most of the poems Ferlinghetti read would be collected in Wild dreams of a new beginning (1988) and most of the poems Hadley read would be collected in Voice of the borderlands (2005). Rather than dividing the reading in half, Ferlinghetti and Hadley took turns, mostly alternating every other poem. Before reading "Mountain mule dreams," Ferlinghetti said the next several poems were "Bisbee poems, written about the last couple days." "Mountain mule dreams" would serve as the title for a Ferlinghetti collection published by Bisbee Press Collective in 1980. Before singing "Alma de mi alma," Hadley said "Translated, it would be 'The willow and the palm tree gently touch each other, alma de me alma, alma of my soul, or soul of my soul, how beautiful you were.' This poem begins with those first four lines that Carlos [Yslava] sung."
