Title
[Allen Ginsberg teaching mantras at the University at Buffalo, March 8, 1968] / Allen Ginsberg.
Description
Recorded in the Millard Fillmore Room at the University at Buffalo on March 8, 1968 by Allen De Loach on a 7 inch Scotch reel-to-reel tape. The Poetry Collection acquired the recording from De Loach.
On March 8, 1968, Allen Ginsberg taught mantras to students at the State University of New York at Buffalo, with the aid of an unidentified student from the Radha-Krishna Temple in New York City. The sheet on which the mantras were listed that Ginsberg used to indicate the transitions from one mantra to the next, was included in The works of Allen Ginsberg 1941-1994: a descriptive bibliography by Bill Morgan. The single sheet (28 x 21.6 cm.) is titled: Mantras as Taught by Allen Ginsberg. Buffalo, NY: Incense Press, SUNYAB LEMAR, March 8, 1968. It contains the texts and translations of eleven chants compiled by the poet. Ginsberg mentioned that he had been introduced to the first mantra ("Om Raksha Hum Hum Hum Phat Svah") by Gary Snyder.
