Title
[Lecture and poetry reading at the University at Buffalo, October 20, 1970] / Edward Dorn.
Description
Recorded at the University at Buffalo in Buffalo, New York on October 20, 1970 by Allen De Loach on 7 inch Scotch reel-to-reel tape.
In this lecture and poetry reading, held at the University at Buffalo on October 20, 1970, Edward Dorn devoted most of the time to discussing Gunslinger, but also to making comments about The job by William S. Burroughs, Parmenides, The teachings of Don Juan by Carlos Castaneda, John Wieners, Ludwig Wittgenstein, Tom Raworth, Lee Harwood, the tongue versus the mind, Las Vegas, New York City, and Paolo Soleri. "Parmenides is certainly a poet," Dorn said. "Wittgenstein is a poet, too. Anybody who's interesting is a poet. I wouldn't read anybody who wasn't a poet. It's impossible, anyway, because that's the only voice, isn't it? It's the only voice we have." In the middle of the lecture, in tracks two and three of disc two, Dorn reads four poems by Tom Raworth, one of which is titled "Going away poem for Lee Harwood," which Dorn followed up by saying, "I read the one to Lee Harwood because I think he's going to be reading here, too, as well as Tom Raworth. . . . If you're around when they come to read you should certainly catch them, because there is a kind of new articulation they've got that needs to be heard. That's like an ad." Dorn concluded by reading the section of Gunslinger titled The cycle and the short book of poems titled Songs: set two: a short count.
