Title
James Joyce and Sylvia Beach outside Shakespeare and Company
Description
A sepia-toned street scene shows James Joyce and Sylvia Beach standing at the entrance of Shakespeare and Company, a historic bookshop in Paris. James Joyce leans casually against the doorframe holding a cane, while the Sylvia Beach stands with hands in coat pockets, facing Joyce. Above the storefront, a third person looks down from a wrought iron balcony. The shop windows display books, and signage identifies the establishment as a bookstore and lending library. The cobblestone street and aged building façade contribute to the early 20th-century atmosphere.
