On verso in Sylvia Beach's handwriting "Nora Joyce, James Joyce | and M. Monnier at Rocfoin | near Maintenon"
James Joyce and M. Monnier sit on a wooden bench in an outdoor setting bordered by brick columns and greenery. James Joyce, seated at left, wears a light-colored cap, round glasses, and dark clothing; M. Monnier, seated at right, has a white beard, wears a flat cap, and holds a cane. Nora Joyce stands behind the bench, dressed in a light-colored outfit with a cloche hat. The group is positioned near a building entrance, with sunlight casting shadows on the ground.
