Title
Painted statuary, Berne cathedral
Description
When the major cathedrals of Europe were built in the Gothic period, the reliefs on the entrance were usually painted. The color has been allowed to fade away in almost all cities, thus giving rise to the belief that naturally colored stone was the 'original' way in which persons of centuries back came to mass. However, in fact the figures were painted brightly, thus adding to the emotion of the religious experience.
