Title
Porta nigra [black gate], Trier
Description
Constructed around 180 of the Common Era, this symbol of Roman power stood at the fringe of the Empire. The Rhine river provided the major defensive against Germanic tribes. The gate itself shows extraordinary craftsmanship. It measures 118 feet long, 70.5 feet wide and 90 feet high. The entire structure is made without mortar - the sandstone blocks are connected only by iron rods. The stone blocks weigh as much as six metric tons each.
