Description
Charlemagne established the seat of Holy Roman Empire here in 768 CE, building a splendid basilica to honor this event. Aachen was known for its hot springs, even in Roman times. Leaders of the Holy Roman Empire continued to be buried here from the time of Charlemagne until 1531.
