Description
Built ~186 and 200 CE, this gate marked the entrance to the largest Roman city north of the Alps. "Porta Nigra" literally means "black stone," referring the effect of centuries of weathering. It stands at the city's northern entrance. Trier is also known as birthplace of Karl Marx.
