Canal house boats and private homes, Amsterdam

At the heart of the city of Amsterdam are five major circular canals, along which the most splendid homes stand. Population growth and lack of space -- in addition to high costs of permanent housing restrictions on building height and architectural character -- have increasingly driven newcomers and permanent residents alike to live in houseboats.
