Title
Pelican in her Piety
Description
The Aachen Cathedral in Western Germany is the oldest cathedral in northern Europe, built from 796-805 and commissioned by Charlemagne. It boasts a variety of mosaics, including one featuring a mother pelican feeding her young the blood of her breast. The pelican was a symbol of the passion of the Christ in medieval times and holds a prominent place in Aachen's great cathedral.
