Title
Elaborate Roman mosaic floor
Description
This stunning mosaic was assembled in the Roman outpost of Colonia Claudia Ara Agrippinensium, the basis for modern Cologne, during the third century CE. In all likelihood, it decorated an elaborate villa. In addition to realistic depictions of animals, note how realistically humans are portrayed. The mosaic was uncovered in 1941 during construction of an air-raid shelter. The museum in which it is housed dates from 1974.
