Title
Mesquita interior, Cordoba
Description
This extraordinary church (known officially as the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Assumption) is more popularly called the "Mosque Cathedral." The columns shown in this picture was constructed in several stages between 784 and 987CE. The city of Cordoba served as the capital of Andalusia (al-Andalus. in Arabic), the last Muslim stronghold on the Iberian peninsula. The church's giant arches, with 856 columns of jasper, onyx, marble, and granite, were made from pieces of the Roman temple which had occupied the site previously, as well as other destroyed Roman buildings.
