Jehane and the Golden Cup, from 'Golden Wings'
Subject
Watercolor painting--19th century.
English poetry--19th century.
Description
A central figure in a long, flowing, semi-transparent gown decorated with gold accents holds a golden chalice aloft. The figure's arm is extended toward a row of stylized, expressive faces arranged in a horizontal panel at the top of the composition; several appear to be singing or chanting, with open mouths and visible gestures. The figure's gown features heart and crescent motifs and trails behind in soft curves. The overall palette is muted, with touches of gold and pale lavender. Signed “Frances E. Macdonald 1897” in the lower left.
