Subject
Watercolor painting--19th century.
English poetry--19th century.
Description
A central figure lies motionless in a boat, dressed in an ornate robe and positioned horizontally with eyes closed. Several black swans with red beaks surround the boat, and others floating nearby. The water is dark and reflective, and the background fades into deep shadow. Subtle architectural or natural forms appear faintly in the distance. Signed "Frances E. Macdonald, 1897" in the lower left.
