Title
Dalit ["Untouchable"] community
Description
Significant stratification of Indian society persists, despite major government initiatives and laws. The persons affected most negatively are the Dalits -- the "broken people," once known as "Untouchables." Traditional Hindu beliefs consign them to the most contaminating jobs, such as cleaning latrines, tanning or sweeping. Under the caste system, at least traditionally, jobs were hereditary, while choice of marriage partner was limited to one's own caste.
